Carol returns from vacation to find that Marcus has hired two non-English speakers, to develop diversity at work. Carol and her boss Serena have concerns about their minimum English and the consequent perceptions of Cutting Edge Corporation appearing unprofessional. Carlos and Tammy manage to retain their positions and all the staff are now required to help them improve their English.
Carol returns from holidays to discover that Marcus promoted Carlos to receptionist and hired Tammy in accounting, and neither speaks much English. Marcus is very proud of the added ‘diversity’, while Carol is very concerned about Carlos being the first point of contact and ‘face’ of the company. Marcus believes that diversity of culture is important and they should be able to help the newcomers adapt. Carol prepares Tammy and Carlos for Serena’s imminent arrival from head office, but uses lots of expressions they do not understand. Serena arrives and is shocked by their lack of minimum English, but decides that the company will assist them with their English so they can add value to the company as employees fluent in Spanish and Chinese.
